Could My Child Benefit from Speech-Language Services?
If you notice any of the following behaviors in your child and you have concerns about his/her speech or language development, talk to your child's primary care provider about a referral for a speech and language evaluation at KRS.
Not expressing excitement or pain
Not smiling when spoken to as an infant
Has difficulty following simple directions
Has not had his/her first word, or is not rapidly gaining new words
Does not frequently put multiple words together to form phrases or sentences
Language development seems much slower than their older siblings
Not naming objects and actions during playtime or when reading books
Does not seem interested in playing with other children
When asked a question, he/she responds by repeating part of the question (e.g., "Do you want some milk", child responds, "want some milk?")
Other people have difficulty understanding his/her speech
My child does not verbalize during play
Has difficulty answering simple questions
Frequently repeats words and syllables (stuttering)
Does not understand basic concepts such as opposites (on/off, hot/cold, etc) or prepositions (behind, under, over, etc.)
frequently misuses pronouns (e.g., "him not here")
